London City Guide

With its unique blend of historic charm and modern flair, London is a city that promises unforgettable experiences. From interactive museums and expansive parks to quirky markets and immersive cultural experiences, this guide will help you navigate the perfect day (or week) out with kids in town.

We are all familiar with the classics of London sightseeing, but we have contacted our local family of four to tell us their favourite spots to go to with their 6 and 3 year old!

Morning: Educational Adventures

Natural History Museum

Kickstart the day at the iconic Natural History Museum in South Kensington. A visual feast for curious minds, it’s famed for its dinosaur skeletons, especially the towering blue whale in the Hintze Hall. Don’t miss the interactive exhibits that explain everything from volcanoes to the secrets of deep-sea creatures. Best part? Entry is free, though booking a slot online can help you avoid long waits.

Science Museum

Next door, the Science Museum offers hands-on galleries like the Wonderlab with awe-inspiring experiments and activities for children of all ages. It’s an excellent way to fuel a love for science and spark curiosity about how the world works.

Belmont Farm

Not in the mood for museums and think your little one would enjoy some time with animals instead? Head over to Belmont Farm for a day filled with fun! Your child can get up close with the animals, pet them, and even help with feeding. It’s an experience that promises joy, laughter, and a break from the usual routine.

Lunch: Family-Friendly Eats

Dishoom – Covent Garden

For a family-friendly meal, visit Dishoom in Covent Garden. This Bombay café-inspired eatery welcomes kids with open arms and serves mouth-watering dishes that appeal to both adventurous and simple palates. Their breakfast naan rolls and small plates are a hit for sharing. Needless to say the Covent Garden area is itself perfect for a kids outing!

Borough Market Picnics

For a more casual lunch, grab artisan sandwiches or pastries at Borough Market and head to *Potters Fields Park for a picnic with a view of Tower Bridge. The market is full of treats, including fresh fruit smoothies and homemade gelato that children will love.

Afternoon: Play and Exploration

Frameless Immersive Art Experience

Make sure to check out the website and book in advance!  The Multi-sensory Tots classes definitely deserve special attention. The classes are suitable for all pre-school ages, but for those coming with babies under 12 months, families are encouraged and to actively participate, holding and moving with the baby throughout the class. Tickets are selling out fast, so make sure you book your spot on time.

The Diana Memorial Playground

In Kensington Gardens, this Peter Pan-themed playground is a fantasy world come to life. With a giant pirate ship, sensory trails, and teepees, it’s a space for creative play where parents can relax on nearby benches while the kids let their imaginations run wild.

Bubble planet Wembley – beautiful for all ages!

Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park

One of London’s most beloved holiday attractions, offering a festive escape during the winter season. Each year, the park transforms into a magical hub filled with seasonal activities, sparkling lights, and entertainment that draws visitors from all over. You can enjoy the UK's largest outdoor ice rink, shop at charming Christmas markets, explore dazzling ice sculptures in the Magical Ice Kingdom, and experience thrilling rides and live performances. With delicious seasonal food, cozy bars, and even Santa Land for kids, it's a must-visit spot during the winter season. Pre-booking and warm clothing are recommended for a comfortable and enjoyable visit.

Evening: Wind Down with Culture

West End Theatre Shows- The Classics are there for a Reason

Treat your family to an early evening matinee of a West End show. Productions like “Matilda the Musical” or “The Lion King” captivate audiences with their vibrant performances and child-friendly storytelling.

Sky Garden

End your day at the Sky Garden, a public space perched atop a skyscraper that offers panoramic views of the city. Children can spot famous landmarks while enjoying a snack at the café. Entry is free, but booking is essential to secure your spot.

Winter Market at the Queen's Walk, Southbank Centre – a short walk from the London Eye!

Ice skating at the Somerset House- Finish off your day on skates with pop-up restaurants and  bars and music for a truly magical evening!

Essential Tips for Parents

Public Transport: Get an Oyster card or use contactless payment for affordable rides on the Tube and buses. Strollers are welcome on most public transport, but the Double-Decker Buses often provide easier access than the Underground during peak times.

Parks and Open Spaces: Don’t underestimate the city's green lungs. Parks like Regents Park and Hampstead Heath are our top picks.
